Graduation Etiquette

The baccalaureate services and commencement ceremony are intended to be a dignified ceremony for honoring the graduates' very important accomplishments. Decorum and courtesy are important to the entire guest and graduates and their families. Here are a few suggestions to remember regarding behavior at your baccalaureate and graduation ceremonies:

  • NEVER arrive late; it is not considered fashionably late.
  • Cell phones should be turned off
  • Food, beverages, and smoking are considered inappropriate
  • Proper dress attire should be worn; jeans and shorts, sandals and tennis shoes should be avoided
  • Men should remove their caps during the school song and the National Anthem
  • An early departure is noticed by everyone in the audience and by the graduates
  • Graduation Announcements, Graduation Invitations and Graduation Cards are intended to announce to the world, invite your special family, friends and guest and share the great news of your graduation accomplishment. Here are some helpful hints for w riting your graduation announcements.
  • Do not use abbreviations except for titles and state. Example:
    Mr. and Mrs. John Smith
    5901 Main Street
    Avon , NC   00345
  • Do not use punctuation at the end of lines; however, commas should be used within the lines to separate the day from the date, the city from the state, and a man's surname from "Jr./junior/II/III", etc.
  • Days, dates and times are always spelled out.
  • The graduation invitations should be placed in the envelope with the folded edge down and the front of the announcement facing the envelope flap.
  • The back flap of this envelope should be personalized with the return address of the sender .
  • Send your invitations via first class mail two weeks before or after the graduation.
